Soft top wear

Post by GOT0NE » 29 Sep 2014, 20:44

Hi fellow beemers. Has anyone experienced a wear point on their soft top. I have one appearing in the nearside rear quarter, just behind the rear window. It appeared about a year ago, as a small break of a few fibres and has gradually enlarged to about 6 mm wide.
Initially I thought it was wear from inside when the roof was down, as the location folds inwards, so I put some reinforcement ( Bicycle inner tube patches) on the inside. There is no sign of wear on these, but the hole is increasing. I can;t see that anything of the mechanism is bearing on the material at any point in the movement or in place, so is something eating it?

I am about to put a bicycle Patch on the outside, unless anyone knows different. ?????????????

I'm a long way from a fabric expert, but that doesn't look like wear or insect-based. My guess would be either 'rot' from being down when damp or maybe a quality issue in the weave. Could also be too much tension in the roof mechanism which has manifested itself at the weakest point?

How well do you know the car's history?

I'm the second owner, full service history. Owner 1 Female (irrelevant) Rural Fife - 4 yrs 19000 miles. Unable to contact her. Tried before purchase from dealer. Me in Edinburgh 18 months now 35000.
No adverse environmental conditions such as chemical works etc in either location. Deterioration continues.
Initial "mark" appeared after 6 months of my summer ownership. Never down damp.
Tension would, I believe, have to be huge to do this, and it does not feel tight to the touch.
Part of the metallic mechanism touches the inside during opening, but looks as though it is the same both sides, with no "wear" on the offside.
Baffled!

If it was the mechanism it would show more wear from the inside. That looks to be from the outside which would suggest damp or mould

Try an iron-on canvas patch for a temporary fix as a bicycle patch only adheres to rubber.
