Yeh I think you will find if you don't go for the obvious learner cars like polo,fiesta,saxo,corsa etc you might find it cheaper even with a bigger engine.
It was cheaper for me to drive a 1.8 Sierra than a 1.1 fiesta

Old school polo and lupo's are massive on the dub seen. Relatively cheap to buy aswell

Lupo/Arosa are decent little boxes, used one for several months to 'commute' what would be a 60k year. Check carefully though where the shocks and bouncy bits meet the undersides, previous enthusiastic speed hump hopping by youngsters had torn the mounts out of the subframe......
