Flexi down pipe

Post by Christian_Booth » 22 Jan 2017, 00:34

Hi, wondering if anyone can help. Recently bought a 118d M sport and had to service it after a week of ownership, £422.00,ouch! Anyway the BMW garage came up with some advisory notices. Warn wiper blades, and a rattle coming from the rear exhaust system. The women said I would need a new flexi down pipe, which takes about two hours in labor. £341.00. My question is, does it need replacing if it's rattling (not blowing). In my opinion if it's an advisory and it's just rattling, could it just be repaired? Your opinions would gratefully be appreciated.

Much depends on the cause of the rattle! If the pipe metal has/is broken down it's only a matter of time before it disintegrates and possibly leaves you stranded vs.......if a bracket is damaged it may last a long time.

The price seems excessive though? Is this a main dealer at £100+ per hour? I'd check out a local indie to compare the prices?

You can fit an entire exhaust system in 2 hours!

As above......get it checked out at a local indie because that cost is ridiculous

Thanks all. Is this part fitted by welding or are brackets used? Will check with a local specialist. Found the part on ebay for around £50. I don't understand how it would rattle if the part is designed to flex? To be honest, I can't hear anything though when in put my foot down, I hear a throaty noise, could that be this?

If it's what I think it is (just below the DPF) the it's clamped - access isn't easy though and the exhaust needs to be decoupled to free it up.

Joking aside - the N54 engine isn't quiet so doubt you'd hear a rattle from inside!
