Flexi link? E46

Post by Chandlerslad » 14 Jan 2018, 18:33

I’ve had my e46 saloon in for the recall air bags and the dealer carried out a visual health check while the car was there. Usual bumpf about corroded rear shockers & brake pipes but.... o/s/r flexi link snapped. I asked to see one on the parts diagram and was told they couldn’t find it, didn’t know if it’s a welded part or bolt on, and if it’s welded on they say it can’t be re welded.
I’m confused here guys, firstly I thought all metal could be welded and second I have no idea what they’re talked no about.
Could some kind soul take pity on me and explain a) what it is and b) why it can’t be welded if it’s snapped?
Thanks for any help you can give me

The flexi link is the pipe that goes from the hard brake lines to the wheels. At that point they have to be flexible for obvious reasons,

Easy replacement for any garage and no welding required as it's a bolt on part

They need to be more specific. There are quite a few bushes, drop links etc on the rear. Take it to a decent independent garage to get it checked

I’ve just discovered that the tester that usually does my MOT tests is actually an ex BMW master technician so it looks like a visit to the test garage is in order.

Result!
I’ve been to the test station to see Dave.
The mysterious flexi link is actually the bracket that the flexi brake pipe is fastened to in order to stop it pulling on the rigid brake line.
Why on earth the dealership put the fear of god up me by showing a picture of the rear subframe and associated bushes, brackets etc then quoting over a grand for parts is beyond me. The test station has quoted for an hour’s labour to secure the flexi. I honestly thought the car must be a death trap the way it was being described to me. I’ve heard of upselling at dealerships before but nothing on this scale.
