E92 335i oil consumption

Post by Shanusascarabus » 04 Jun 2017, 21:06

I seem to be "using" quite a lot of oil .... I know these cars do apparently use quite a bit however I'm fairly certain I have a leak.... I can't give you exact figures just yet but I added a litre approx 8 weeks ago and equates to around 1500 miles.... but I'm expecting the oil light to come on very soon so I'll take note on mileage and add a litre when it asks and report back.
I would like to add that I commute 15 miles to work and back each day and in around 7 weeks it dropped 1 notch on the display.... however last week we went away for a week to the caravan and unless the display needs time to warm up then it's now showing as empty ( hence waiting for the low oil warming lamp to light up ).
This was driving constantly on A and B roads for around 2 hours each way at a steady pace 50-70mph but it looks like it's used up 3 notches on the oil meter in a very short time as opposed to the previous 6-7 weeks of commuting...... any ideas ??
Also just to add that after driving at speed on the journey... when slowed down through a village or behind a tractor you can smell burning oil... not a really strong smell but it's there..... no smoke from the exhaust that I can see either.
There is no obvious sign of leaks ( nothing on the undercarriage) ...... nothing obvious around the rocker/valve cover..... a little dirty oil on the front of the engine and around the oil filter housing..... the spongy material under the engine cover seems to hold quite a bit of oil so maybe oil filler cap is at fault ???
Would a coked/oiled up inlet manifold and valves cause anything like this ??
Anyway I have a list of possibilities that could be done DIY... however I don't just want to throw an endless amount if money at the car if I don't need to so advise on what to try first would be most welcome... here we go...

Walnut blast inlet
Oil cap
Oil filter housing
Valve cover
PCV valve

I'm also only 1200 miles from a service but I'm reluctant to do it without diagnosing the leak as it's literally pouring money down the drain... although a fresh filter and oil can only be a good thing.
Any help, advice or general tips would be most welcome and lots cheaper than a specialist spending a few hours finding the fault.
Cheers guys

Without looking at the car, some of the old engines in mean, the old 328 or 318 the gaskets for the oil filter goes might be an idea to looking around this area

The dash display does take a while to read - so don't assume empty!! Too much oil is as bad as too little!

The fact you have a smell of burnt oil and nothing underneath suggests a leak towards the top of the engine. The oil filter casing is a known weak point - it's plastic so can go brittle and crack if over-tightened - this is of course a service (related!) item as the filter will be replaced. Oil filler cap is unlikely as they're not tightened up, but would be obvious as the sound-proofing immediately above it would be soaked and the engine would run badly due to lost crankcase pressure. Valve cover is a possibility, but should be visible. Inlet mani should have no relation to the engine oil at all!!

FWIW my 135i (same engine) uses none at all!

You are correct regarding the dash level sensor taking ages..... today.. first day back at work I did it again and low and behold..

So it hasn't lost quite as much as I'd thought but it is losing it.....

Ok, just for reference the car asked for a 1lt top up today

Just over 84k so lets see how long it takes.... although I am just coming up to a service in 1500 miles which is sure to throw a spanner in the works.... i may buy a new oil filter cap to eliminate it... looks ok though to be fair.

The area around the filter housing doesn't look perfect so I may just replace the housing gasket, although I have heard one of these bolts are a real pain due to the inlet manifold

Looks fine and dry - but they're fairly cheap (non-OEM) so np harm in replacing.

Yeah that's my way of thinking too, cheap enough to eliminate, I'm probably being a little OCD to be honest as it's causing no issues ... no running problems.. no mess and it's probably near within BMW spec
