My ownership insight of the E36 328i Sport Coupe Auto (M52B28 2.8 Litre 6-Cyl)

Year of car 1996
Year bought 2005
Road tax approx £225 per year
MPG around 25-30MPG average

In brief

I was very lucky to have bought this car when I was 18 years old, back when you could still by an E46 brand new! Back then they were still as highly sought after as they are now.

The main appeal of this car was the fact it looked roughly like an M3 but had enough differences to not be a replica. As an 18 year old this was important as I had no hope of insuring an M3.

The engine is epic, for an over 20 year old N/A engine design, it shifted well and was generally reliable. The suspension was factory uprated yellow bilstein shocks with springs that gave better handling and a drop of approx 15mm compared to non sport models. Being a prefacelift it was fitted with a factory LSD.

My particular car was highly specced, with black heated leather sports seats, sunroof, 18 button OBC, Climate control, electric everything etc.

The interior of a decent E36 is a lovely place to be, and much more solid than the E46 that came after.

Bad bits

There are not too many bad things to say about the car. now they are getting on abit, the ones I've seen have suffered from the dreaded rust problem.

They tend to suffer with head gasket failure too, which means the engine is throw away. This is what happened to mine, and another engine would have been the only proper option. I ended up breaking mine up as it was worth far more in bits than it was as a whole :(

All in all I loved the car to pieces and while I still miss it to this day.

Cheers guys. I do really miss the car, had things been different then I would have put it back on the road.

Really struggled to find another BMW that I've felt the same about. The E39 came the closest, but that's a story for another owner insight
