e46 strange connection to manifold down pipe

Post by Coupe2008 » 15 Nov 2017, 11:40

Hi all. I have been trying to sort my Grandson's e46 320d year 2003, which failed the MOT with an exhaust leak. Sorted a rear hanger problem but there seems to be a leak around a collar/tube which fits over the downpipe from the exhaust manifold . Not seen any fittings like this on searching for exhaust sytems. Has anyone got any ideas ? There is no flex joint on the system just solid pipe work.
Regards

Under that collar/tube is a flexi-pipe, they are prone to splitting. My wife had it go on her 320d. We replaced with a genuine bmw part, but lots of people just fit a decat pipe.

FAB_BMW was correct. It took a bit of arm wrestling but with an angle grinder ( after opening up the metal 'cover' ) there was indeed a split flexy pipe. This was cut off and a replacement sourced from e-bay ( each end matched the pipe it connected too) clamped on along with some exhaust sealing paste. Car past MOT without issue. A car lift was essential to get access though.
Sorry about the pause in replying.
