E46 key fob issue

Post by e30 baur » 24 Apr 2017, 22:26

Need some help. I recently bought a 2002 e46 325 convertible. They key I got was faulty. Sometimes it starts the car sometimes nit. I thi k it is a problem with the chip in the key housing. As the remote locking also didnt work I decided to purchase a new one ditect from bmw. The problem is that the new key works in the lock but the remote buttons do not just like the old one. The bmw chap did the programming procedure but it won't work the central locking. Said I could have their technician to look at it but declined as I thought it might cost a fortune to just have a look. What can i do next to fix it.
Both keys do not operate the remote functions but work in the door lock.

Needs alignment procedure with proper BMW software and or your FBD antenna is knackered

I assume by alignment you mean pairing key to car? I think this has been done already. With regards to the antenna, is this something you can buy off the shelf or does it mean an expensive visit to bmw? Could there be any other reason?

The antenna on convertible is inside the rear view mirror and not replaceable so you have to replace the whole mirror, you should be able to pick one up from ebay but you must ensure that it is a UK one so the operating frequency is correct and is definitely from a convertible as all other models have the antenna in the roof lining above the rear windscreen

Also try this.

Sit in the car

take the key and hold down the UNLOCK button on the key

While still holding the unlock button, insert the key into the ignition and turn it on for 2 seconds, no more, no less, turn it back off and remove the key while STILL holding the unlock button.

Press the lock button 3 times within 3 seconds WHILE STILL HOLDING THE UNLOCK BUTTON. let go of the unlock button.

The locks will lock and unlock to signal that they are now operational.

this may take several times until it works, but once the locks cycle, it means that its good to go.

Once I get a UK spec mirror for a convertible, is there any programming to be done for that or us it just plug and play? Is there anything else I should look at?

Thanks for that. Looks a bit awkward but I'll give it a try.

That didn't work. As.mentioned before, I don't think it is a programming issue. I also don't think it is a key issue. Some have said it might be the antenna in the mirror. If not that what would I try next?

You need to replace the mirror, no coding or programming is needed, if it still doesn't work after that you will need to be checking the wiring

Replaced the mirror with a second hand one that was working before removal. Same issue. Still can't remotely lock and unlock car. Next suggestion please.
