E90 LCI with iDrive and Audio Streaming

Post by n2n_man » 08 Aug 2016, 23:06

Hi all,

I joined this forum a couple of months back to catch up on the world of BMWs as I felt the need to get behind the wheel of a beemer once again.

Anyway bought a 320D on an 09 plate a few days ago. it has iDrive with Bluetooth so I thought great I can stream Spotify from my iPhone.
How wrong I was to learn that the Bluetooth does not support A2DP, apparently later models 2011 onwards do but this one doesn't.

I have found many posts on the subject where the resolution is to purchase a dongle that plugs into the AUX and USB port in the centre console.
Unfortunately I only have a AUX port, no USB.

There is a USB port in the glove compartment but when I plugged my phone in using a lightning cable it only picked it up to charge, idrive did not pick it up.

Anyone have any luck with using any of the many dongles that seem to be available?

Would appreciate your advice!

Many thanks

Maxwell may be the man for this question! He is the guru of all electronic things and retro-fit...

As you have CIC headunit you can add a combined AUX/USB port in the centre console very easily, the glovebox USB is only for software/map updating which is why you cannot use it for your music.
Don't have an experience of the Bluetooth adapters so can't really comment

Hi Maxwell,
Many thanks, how do I go about adding USB?, is there a kit I can buy from the dealer.
Would really welcome your input on this.

Many thanks for s being across the info on retrofitting a USB port in the centre console.
Seems like quite an involved piece of work, by the sounds of not most the interior will have to come out including the satnav/head unit?
I have a snap in adaptor in the centre console for a mobile phone already. Would this indicate that some of the components/wiring is already in place?

According to your build list you have option $609 which is navigation system professional so it could be just a case of adding the USB port and wiring to the head unit but need to see a picture of the back of your head unit to confirm, generally if you don't have usb in the armrest the HU does not have capability which means fitting retrofit kit.
The glovebox usb can transfer music to the internal HDD though.

Just called the dealer who has quoted me around 300.00 for the retrofit kit and a further 540.00 for a 'high charger control unit' whatever one of them is!

I can just about take the hit on the retrofit kit, but with the added cost of this extra unit, it's really not worth it for one USB.
Don't get me wrong, am really keen to have it but not at that kind of money!

Just to clarify the head unit is the CD player underneath the vents, not the screen? If so I'll pop it out and send you a pic if that's OK?

you can get the control unit on ebay - no need for pic anymore have checked the wiring diagrams and you need the retrofit kit, you can get a discount from our forum sponsor - ask for price here http://www.bmwenthusiasts.co.uk/forum/v ... .php?f=141" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
