Handbreak adjustment

Post by Danny645 » 29 Feb 2016, 20:49

Hi all,

Is there somewhere on the 2004 645 where I can easily adjust the handbreak or do the wheels have to come off?

I'm guessing that there are small shoes inside the rear break disc hub?

You can do it with the wheels on, you just need to remove one of the wheel bolts and position the hole over the adjuster in the 25 past position for the drivers side and 25 to for the passenger side, use a flat bladed screwdriver inserted into the hole to nudge the adjuster ratchet mechanism one notch at a time.
When you do this make sure the hand brake lever is on the 3rd notch and feel for the shoes starting to grip as you adjust, above all make sure the wheel is still completely free with the lever on the first notch after any adjustment.

I suspect though that the real problem will be cable stretch and you need a new one fitting, however remember that this is a BMW and handbrakes are generally piss poor as standard.
