Gear leaver, gaiter and surround removal

Post by Danny645 » 19 Feb 2016, 21:11

Hi there,

The surround on my 2004 645i is looking not so good sadly, so thought I's buy some carbon fibre wrap and cover it. How do you remove the gear shiter on the auto box please? Also the gaiter and the surround (panel) which it all mounts round please?

Does anyone have a step by step picture guide they can point me too please?

Thanks

Its dead easy, put the gear lever in neutral position and pull up quite hard, watch your teeth if you are leaning over it :))
The gaiter is just clipped in so just gently push it in towards the gear lever and lift it out one edge at a time.
The surround is also clipped in but once the gaiter is removed you can get some fingers under it and ease it out upwards, don't pull too hard as you will damage the wiring if you do, Once you have it off the centre console disconnect the wiring from the LED gear indicator module and anything else still connected to it.

Literally took me more time to type this than it does to do it

Thanks Maxwell. :)

Do I need to press the button on the gear leaver when its in N or just pull it?

I usually do but whether you need to I don't know, somehow just feels safer doing it.
