Door card removal and speaker replacement

Post by AK_ » 07 Dec 2011, 10:07

Can anyone give me a rough guide to speaker replacement as Lewy only has 1 out of 4 door speakers working so its going to be me that has to end up fixing it!

Yep, I thought it sounded a little rear biased so played about with fade and balance and found the reason

What do you want to know?

There's 5 in the front - 2 x door speakers, 2 x tweeters and 1 x dash centre. I hope I'm wrong but I fear it may be more than speaker replacement if more than one doesn't work?

haha, quality!! Cheers AK!

Basically when you use the left / right fader, all the way to one side gives off no sound at all and on the other side gave a very muted sound - that's right isn't it AK? Assuming that the biased was all the way at towards the front when we did this test although I wasn't in the car for all of this...

Almost certainly not the speakers unfortunately (as both front channels are not working correctly). I had something similar on mine and the amp had water damage (not uncommon on E64). As it's a simple job, I'd take the amp out of the boot and check all the connections are clean and that there is no sign of water ingress. Clean up the connections (assuming the amp isn't water damaged) and re-wire (without refitting) and see if any/all channels come back?

Basically the mid in the driver's door works, the mid in the left and both tweeters do not. Didn't realise there was a center speaker but that doesn't appear to work either. Where's the amp located in the boot?

There's a possibility there isn't a middle one - dunno the spec on Lewy's but he may not have the same ICE. Easy to find out, the speaker cover prises off and you'll see (from outside) if there's a speaker!

The amp is behind the panel in the LH side of the boot as you look into it from the rear. The covering panel is quite large and a bit of a faff to remove (watch out for the torx bolts that screw upwards) When you get that out, the amp should be in plain site. All the pins on mine (there's a lot!) were covered in white fur from water damage. Electircal terminal cleaner (Maplins) and a combination of old toothbrush and fine wire brush............assuming no internal damage!
