Little progress.

the original inlet manifold is a 1 piece casting retained with studs, this is okay because positional alignment isn’t critical.

Because my itbs work in pairs they need to be aligned with each other pretty well. Aligning things on threads is bad practice to me, so I’ve machined these top hats. They fit nicely over the studs, but give a very accurate diameter for a pair of itbs to locate on (because all the itbs share studs)

I went eurowrongparts for a water pump belt and they gave me this super princess sparkle fairy edition.

I have no idea but it actually has sparkly glitter bits in it.

Draw of shiny things is growing. Top right is the roughed out bell mouths, the second op will see them bolted to a fixture so I can profile around them and all the rads.

I spent the rest of the afternoon trying and failing to remove the bushes from a rear subframe I bought. I’ve got the 2 small diff ones out but the 4 body and 1 large diff are being right dicks. I’m gonna do what I did last time and burn out the centres with a gas axe then use an alligator saw to slit through the outer casing and then punch the outer casing out.

Custom cages 6 point weld in thingy ordered. Hopefully it arrives before they shut for Christmas.

Removing subframe buses from an e46;

Step 1 - use a bush puller to skin your knuckles and get a sweat on whilst achieving nothing.


Step 2 - get the gas axe out and burn the fuck out of it.

Step 3 - the burning mess melts out and falls on the floor

Step 4 - a puddle of liquid aluminium and burnt rubber

Step 5 - The outer steel casing then just falls out with the gentle twat of a sledge hammer.



Disclaimer - probably don’t try this if you haven’t got a full face respirator and fume extractor, that burning rubber is nasty.



On the plus side all the poly bushes have turned up so I can get the subframe and arb powder coated (plus filling the subframe with dinatrol) ready for swapping out. The subframe reinforcement kit has also showed up.

Did some more yesterday.

Another 60kg removed from the car.

Total removed so far is 130kg.

When I swap the drivers seat for the club sport I’ve got, that will save another 25kg (-30 +5) With a passenger club sport fitted as well the car will be minus 150kg.

The roll cage apparently weighs 37kg so that’s 113kg saved so far.

There’s more to come from things like the exhaust system, air con etc.. which I’ll weigh as I remove.

This is the first hand-made engine I've ever seen!!

Great work mate - good to see some wanton destruction of parts that don't want to 'play' too!

If you have time
You can reduce the weight more but removing the sound deadening pads and more importantly the rubber underseal
In my younger days I worked in the Motorsport industry (small race company)
And the first thing we would do is remove all the underseal and sound deadening pads then look at what else isn't needed like redundant brackets etc
Build it under race reg's and then if you had to add weight to keep it within the reg's you could put the weight where it's of more use (better centre of gravity)

Totally agree. I spent a few hours last Sunday with a heat gun and paint scraper taking off all the sound deadening, it was about 8kg off the top of my head.

Very therapeutic when you get a big bit that comes off in one piece!

I’ve pussied out and come work in my fwd diesel crapsignia today so I’ll have to do some engine stuff rather than the chassis work I was planning on doing.
