Can't be all that old? MULF only appeared on early/mid 2000s cars? E60/90 etc

Has anyone had this problem from the early years of the E60?

Yes it can be replaced however be aware that if you have SOS ability you will lose it as the MULF has a built in sim card and as such has an IMEI mumber just like a mobile phone, the IMEI number is locked to your car VIN Changing the VIN number will not restore SOS as the IMEI will still be different and is registered at BMW AG.
You cannot order a newer MULF with matching IMEI as BMW do not allow it.
You would need to have it coded and have the VIN number changed if you fit a newer one and everything should work except the above.
