Problem with pre-starters & collection box

Post by chrislux » 02 Dec 2014, 09:40

So, my '05 3.0d was in garage (Main Dealer) for 220,000 kms inspection, change of brake fluid and coolant fluid.

I got a call this mrng to say that the car wasn't ready as they were waiting for some parts.
'What parts?' I asked.
'You had a dead pre-starter (I assume they mean Glowplug) and so we had to replace them all. Also
we had to change the Collection Box and the Black-box to match, total €1400'

Now, as far as I remember you can just change one glowplug, and I don't know what they're talking of
when they say Collection Box, so can someone who maybe knows better than me if I'm being rightly
stitched up here pls??

Hi Si,

Well I was under the impression they were supposed to call me before going ahead.

But what I actually want to know is what the problem is, my technical German isn't 100% and as the car displayed
no symptoms before going in, so I'm confused. All they were supposed to be doing was a diagnostic on why it
was running slightly cool, a friends INPA showed 3-4C too cool, so I suggested thermostat.

You can certainly change a single glow plug - although I guess it's reasonable (a la spark plugs) to change the lot if one has failed.

A wild guess, but based on the price are they referring to the DPF? It 'kinda' collects soot and maybe that is how it translated?

my guess would also be the DPF based on price and mileage however if the DPF was blocked because it cannot regenerate if you have duff glowplugs and controller they could have just replaced those and used the software to force a regeneration.

Ah yes, DPF, never thought about that, wasn't sure if they were fitted on X5's.

That's the problem of Main Stealers, they're no longer mechanics, purely fitters, so it's much easier to replace and
charge a small fortune, rather than take a little bit more time and 'renovate' if possible.
